A lot of people use a program called lyricfairy, which is a web application that manages a database of lyrics and allows you to email the artist. The artist will then look in the database and give you the lyrics, usually within a day or two. This method is easier for some people because they can go to their favorite site and find what they want to listen to. Lyrics downloads are not only popular among people with iPods but also many people who don't have them. There are currently over three million songs on iTunes that have been downloaded from the site. It is very unlikely that every single one has been purchased but most likely there are at least a few thousand that have been downloaded from it. This method of getting music is very convenient but on the other hand is a horrible way to support the artist. Artists receive 10 percent of what is paid for a song on iTunes, which is a big drop from their normal cut from a bought CD. The artists that don't have a label backing them will not get any money from iTunes because the site does not pay them until 45 days after they have been paid by Apple. Even with all of this information laid out, it looks as though few people care about the artists getting paid. They still download it and get away with it, so they will continue to do so until Apple decides to get rid of their site for good. Free mp3 downloads are also very popular among people who don't have an iPod. They are very different from iTunes because they aren't legal. Most people use them because they can't afford a CD or a download from iTunes, but this is definitely a short term solution because it will get you banned from kazaa and other sites.
